Our Team
Partners Michael Gelb and Michael Zayac have been working together for over twenty years creating a wide variety of exciting and challenging projects. Their respective backgrounds in design and construction complement each other and make their partnership strong and productive.
Michael Gelb grew up in New York City and received four years of training at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture in Brooklyn, NY. He worked in many design and construction capacities before moving to Massachusetts in the early nineteen eighties. He manages the administration, sales and design aspects of our business, working out of our offices in Upton. Michael coordinates the design/build process with our clients throughout the course of their projects, from the initial client contact to frequent site visits during the design and construction phases.He is also a dedicated artist, creating sculptures and drawings in a variety of media.
Michael Zayac grew up in Western Massachusetts in a family of builders, and has been around construction sites since before he could walk. He has mastery of a wide range of construction skills from framing to finish carpentry, custom casework and many of the other trades involved in our projects. He is also a tool addict, equipping our cabinet shop with the highest grade professional tools to produce the quality results he demands. Michael manages the production of our projects and works on site or in our cabinet shop as needs require. He relaxes by creating beautiful turned wood vessels in his spare time.Our Company

Gelb and Zayac have been working together since 1985, and formed MGZ Design & Construction in 1995. MGZ Design & Construction is a residential design-build general contractor serving eastern and central Massachusetts. The company is a state registered Home Improvement Contractor and our foremen are state licensed Construction Supervisors. We maintain high limits of liability and Workmen’s Compensation insurance for all our projects.
We provide a complete and integrated group of services starting with initial consultation, schematic and final design, construction drawings, and continuing through all phases of construction. The company will also perform the design or construction phases of a project independently of one another. We maintain close working relationships with civil and structural engineers who consult on many of our projects.
MGZ has a crew of skilled carpenters who work directly for us, allowing us to maintain quality control over all our projects. We also maintain longstanding relationships with trusted subcontractors such as masons, electricians, plumbers, and tile installers, who work as an experienced team to produce our projects on time and within budget. In addition, we can offer our clients a wide variety of custom designed cabinets and other casework which we fabricate in our own fully equipped cabinet shop.
Many of our projects require extensive planning, coordination and contruction over extended periods of time; the true measure of our success are the satisfied clients at the end of this process.
