This family asked MGZ to design and build some badly needed additional space. They had outgrown a fifteen year old family room addition and kitchen renovation and needed a garage for convenience and storage.
We met the challenge of blending an existing house, and old and new additions together to create an expanded and fully remodeled kitchen, a new oversize garage with a large family room above and a screen porch and stone patio to the rear. All are connected by a new centrally located mudroom/rear foyer with ample storage.
We were able to give them the space and function they required while maintaining the scale and integrity of the existing structure.

All these bowls were turned freehand by Michael Zayac on a 1940s restored Oliver lathe which he lovingly rebuilt. With the exception of the Big Leaf Maple from the great northwest woods of Oregon and the Mesquite from New Mexico, the wood for these bowls was hunted for by Michael in the New England hardwood forests. Michael’s passion for woodturning was inspired by a collection of wood vessels collected by Dr. Irwin Thompson.

As he worked at the Thompson household doing many projects over the years his desire to try his hand at creating these masterpieces grew. When Michael created his first bowl “My desire for turning soon became an addiction.” Over time his collection has grown to contain over forty pieces. Michael believes that every piece of wood has a life of its own that is just screaming to be released by his turning. Unfortunately, he cannot spend as much time turning now but his passion still is present.

MGZ, as builder, collaborated with architect Robert Stein to create this challenging project. The existing house was situated on a long, narrow lot which required greater coordination and logistical attention than the average renovation. The construction was unusually extensive, requiring the owners to temporarily relocate to another home during part of the process. When they were able to move back in, however, they believed that it was well worth the wait. The existing house was also extensively renovated, providing an open flow from new to existing spaces, with a light filled kitchen and breakfast area. Click here to see interior views of the new and renovated areas.

This family had recently moved into a large, architecturally diverse and interesting home that had many beautiful features. Unfortunately, the kitchen was not one of them. The house also lacked a functional rear enry and mudrooom. The project consisted of a side mudroom addition and complete kitchen remodel, opening the kitchen to the adjacent dining room and to views of the expansive rear yard.
Our clients had a strong sense of how they wanted their new kitchen to look and feel; we helped make that a reality. Working from photos they provided of craftsman style kitchens and through a series of design meetings and cabinet mock-ups, we arrived at a kitchen design and cabinet style that suited their tastes, complimented their eclectic home and worked with their family’s lifestyle.
